Why Software Deployments and Updates are needed

When you have any number of computers on peoples desks, you still need to manage them and have the ability to apply updates.  These updates may be critical Operating Sysem or Application patches (e.g. an urgent Adobe Flash update).  Or indeed it may be a new application you want everyone to have.

Manually it can take ages to install things on peoples computers especially if they are busy working.

In addition you may want to keep track of what software is installed on what computer so that you can control licenses; control rogue software, and also ensure when you upgrade a PC you can put everythin back on it.

Major solutions, such as Microsoft SCCM, Landesk or Dell Kase are all capable of doing this job – but they cost a fortune to install and also need an expert to run them.  There are other options that we typically recommend for most non-Enterprise customers.

Depending on what is implemented, we can set up systems to provide easy reporting on what software is installed; automatically install software on certain PCs (e.g. MS Publisher on all Marketing PCs); automatically upgrade old version of Firefox to the latest etc.  And of course, keep Windows up to date on all clients.

In other words, we can set up deployment systems so that they do most of the work – you just need to let it happen.

In addition, using our own tools if necessary, we can enable updates and software deployment to take place out of hours even if the PC is off by using WOL (Wake On LAN) functionality.

Typical Project Duration

Project duration will change depending on what system is more suitable to your requirements, but the below is an example to give you an idea:-

  • OPTIONAL:  Demo at your site
    If required, we can bring our test lab to your site and show you how a software update system can be implemented, and how clients can automatially be upgraded and software installed. 
    Duration:  0.5-1 day (50% reduction if full project is undertaken)
  • Planning & Recommendation
    Determine your requirements and write a full recommendation of what system you need and how it needs to be implemented.  What resources are necessary and which applications are covered.
    Duration:  0.5-1 day depending on complexity
  • Automatic Updating of Windows Clients
    Implement Windows Software Update Service (with optional WOL)  to audit, report, and update your computers, including the ability to test patches before deployment
    Duration:  1-2 day for single site (depending on existing infrastructure)
  • Software Deployment System
    Implement software deployment system to automatically audit your computers, and based on rules (or manually) deploy software to clients.
    Duration will vary based on system required, and number of applications.  For example, single site with small scale system and a few simple applications:  2 days.  Same system, multiple sites:  3 days.  Typically, getting everything working with most applications you require will not exceed 5 days.  More complicated Enterprise scale system (Such as SCCM):  5 days+ is a minimum.

A smaller scale software deployment system may be able to share an existing  live server, depending on spec and number of users, though a dedicated systems mangement server is preferred (for all systems management roles).  Enterprise systems will require at least one and potentially more servers. 

Software costs range range from £300 for a typical non-enterprise company to £’000s for enterprise scale.

Final note, not all applications can be automatically installed.  We know multiple techniques to work around most applications, but there are ocassionally ones, normally from smaller vendors, that cannot be safely deployed.  However, the vast majority can.
